“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” That sums up my 2016. I started Sew Bright Creations while I was on maternity leave. It was a means for me to be me. To have something that allowed me to think. Something to do while my husband worked out of town. Just something for me. I absolutely love sewing for my daughter and taking photos together, but actually sewing products and my attempt at running a business, that was for me. At the end of 2015 I retuned to work, however I returned in a part time position. Working outside of my home part time allowed me to also work inside my home (Sew Bright) the other part of the time.
For most of 2016 I felt like I was floating. I didn’t have a business plan. I didn’t really have any goals other than to “make and sell lots of stuff.” I was sort of floating between my work at home and out of home, being a mother, a wife and then again trying to find something for me. I wouldn’t say I was very successful at that. When I completed my year end books for 2016 and I crunched all the numbers, I had very little satisfaction. Not because I didn’t make any money or that I didn’t sell enough, but because I had no baseline, no plan and no goals that I was trying to achieve.
2017 is going to be different, it already is! Although I am not going to pretend to think I have it altogether, because I don’t, but because I have goals. I have lots of goals this year! Weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual goals. No, its not overkill, it’s what I need to keep focused on what I want out of this business. What makes me happy and ultimately, what works for my family.
Every month I check back on my goals to see how I’m doing. Already in January I achieved 13 out of 14 of my monthly goals. That’s 93%. Yes, that’s an A+! It made me happy to know that what I am doing is working for me. And let’s be honest, a happy mom is a happy home! I’m not going to pretend that I have a solid business plan and could tell you where I want to be in 5 years, because I don’t. What I do know, is that I have a plan for 2017 and I’m gonna rock it! Are you in? Because I could definiely use your help.
My goals are not just X number of sales, X amount of money and X percent profit. They are more than that. With this business I want to connect with other moms and be able to work together to help each other succeed. Throughout the year I’ll be looking for brand enthusiasts, bloggers and other handmade businesses to collaborate with on giveaways, other makers for product swaps and I am always down for gifting to celebrities, if you know of any 😛
